People show up late, bring one bag of rolls and then sit down like they have completed a task.

I cook for two days. I clean before. I clean after. Somebody always leaves a wet paper plate on a bookshelf.

Last year my brother took leftovers before I even ate dessert.

This year I said I am not hosting and suddenly the family group chat is full of concern about tradition.

Funny how tradition always happens in my kitchen.

Am I allowed to quit, or do I have to fake a plumbing problem?

Not eating it. Planning it, buying it, cooking it, then hearing four separate complaints like I run a restaurant with no tips.

One kid hates onions. One suddenly hates chicken. My husband says anything with sauce is “a lot.” Yesterday I made plain tacos and someone still asked if we had pizza.

So tonight I made myself eggs and toast and told everybody else to figure it out.

They acted like I had abandoned the family on a mountain.

There is food here. They all have hands. Two of them can drive.

Would it be terrible if I stopped cooking for a week, because I am about one complaint away from serving cereal forever.

There are four people in my house, including me. This should have been simple math.

Then I sat in the parking lot and ate one.

Not because I was starving. I just knew that if I brought all four home, I would hand them out, say I did not really want one, and later scrape frosting off a paper wrapper like a raccoon with a mortgage.

I went back inside and bought another cupcake so nobody would know.

That somehow made the whole thing feel more criminal.

Do other mothers secretly replace food they ate before getting home, or have I crossed into organized dessert fraud?
