I came downstairs after midnight wearing one of my husband’s shirts and nothing else. I thought everybody next door was asleep.
The neighbor was standing in his yard smoking. He looked up. I froze. He did not look away.
I should have stepped back. Instead I reached for a glass in the cabinet like I had not seen him. The whole time I could feel his eyes through the window.
The next afternoon he was outside while I brought in groceries. He smiled and said, “Late night?”
I said, “Couldn’t sleep.”
Now every time I walk past that window, I check whether he is outside before I close the blinds.
