My Mother in Law Brought Her Own Dinner

THE STORY

I spent two days cooking Thanksgiving dinner for twelve people. Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, rolls, pie. The whole sweaty production.

My mother in law walked in carrying a covered plate. Not a side dish. Not something to share. Her own dinner.

She sat down with everyone else, uncovered grilled chicken and rice, and said she had not known what I would be serving. We have eaten Thanksgiving together for nine years.

She does not have allergies. She did not tell me ahead of time. She just packed a backup meal in case mine disappointed her.

I smiled because there were witnesses. Am I being petty, or was that rude?

In laws can turn Tupperware into a weapon.

Bringing your own dinner is either practical or a declaration of war.

Petty, but at least she solved her own dinner problem.

If she brought enough to share, maybe. One sad personal plate? Rude.

The disrespect depends heavily on whether she announced it.

Some people cannot attend a meal without reviewing it.
