The Last Week of School Is Fake School

THE STORY

Why do we keep calling this school when nobody is learning anything?

Monday was movie day. Tuesday was hat day. Today is bring a towel and wear neon. Tomorrow they are having popsicles outside.

My fourth grader has not opened a notebook in nine days, but I still have to drag him out of bed, make lunch, find one clean sock, and sit in car line behind seventy people who have also spiritually checked out.

I know teachers are tired. I am not blaming them. I am blaming the calendar.

Release us. We have completed the sentence.

Does the last week count as school where you live, or is everybody just holding children until noon?

Now the comments get a turn.

Read the room, state your case, and try not to become the reason the next submission exists.

Fake school is still expensive daycare and I say that with love.

Attendance funding and required instructional days are usually the reason. Nobody in the building thinks neon towel day is rigorous academics.

My kid had ‘anything but a backpack day.’ I sent him with a laundry basket because I had no fight left.

This is exactly why the calendar needs to end after testing. Everyone is cooked.

Our last week was minimum days, which somehow made it worse because pickup was at a different random time every day.

Release us. I have signed 11 permission slips for activities that occur inside the building.

Teacher here. We are not pretending learning is happening. We are trying to return library books, locate missing chargers, clean the room, and get 24 children to stop licking popsicle juice off their arms.
