The New Neighbor Introduced Herself With Complaints

THE STORY

New people moved in next door last weekend. I went over with banana bread because my mother raised me to be useful during uncomfortable introductions.

Before I could even hand it to her she said our porch light shines toward their bedroom, our little wind chime is “very active,” and she heard loud laughing from our patio Friday night.

There were four of us outside until 9:40. Nobody was screaming. My sister does have a laugh that could startle livestock, but still.

I said okay, welcome to the neighborhood, and came home with my own banana bread.

My husband says we can adjust the light and remove the chime to keep peace. I say peace usually starts with hello.

Would you accommodate all of it, some of it, or eat the bread and become a problem?

You are right that peace starts with hello, but it sometimes survives because one person chooses not to mirror the other’s tone.

Wait until she hears a leaf blower at 6 a.m. She’ll miss your sister.

As the loud laughing sister in my family, I feel attacked but also represented.

Wind chimes can be maddening at night. I would move that one and angle the light. Laughing before ten is normal human life.

Eat the bread. Become the problem.

Some people move in already braced for conflict. Do one reasonable thing, not all three. It shows goodwill without training her to submit a monthly complaint list.

I would adjust the light if it truly hits the bedroom. The wind chime stays until she learns how introductions work.
