Was I Wrong to Leave Without Saying Goodbye?

THE STORY

We had dinner with my in laws and it went exactly how it always goes.

My mother in law criticized my parenting. My father in law made a joke about my weight. My husband stared at his plate like maybe the mashed potatoes would defend me.

I sat there for forty five minutes trying to be polite.

Then she said my daughter would behave better if I was more consistent, and something in my brain just went nope.

I stood up, grabbed my purse and left. No goodbye. No fake smile. Nothing.

My husband stayed another hour and says I embarrassed him.

Interesting, because nobody seemed worried about embarrassing me.

I come from women who would have grabbed the purse with you.

No goodbye was the goodbye.

Leaving was better than saying what everybody deserved to hear.

Your husband should be embarrassed by their behavior, not your exit.

He stayed an hour? That part would bother me more than the dinner.

You removed yourself before it got ugly. That is restraint.

You do not have to sit through humiliation to prove you are polite.

Silence from your husband was still a choice.

They insulted you in public, then got mad you stopped participating. Classic.
