We Pretended Not to Know Each Other at the Bar

THE STORY

My husband and I went to a hotel bar and pretended we were strangers.

He sat three stools away and bought me a drink. I told him a fake name. He asked whether I was married. I said, “Unfortunately.”

It started as a joke, but something changed. He looked at me differently. I remembered how confident he used to be before bills, kids, and blood pressure medication.

We took the elevator upstairs without holding hands.

The next morning we ate room service in bed and laughed until I cried.

I did not realize how badly I missed being wanted by the person who already had me.
